バイカウツギ・梅花空木　Mock orange

鑑賞用に植栽され５～７月頃に芳香のある白い花を咲かせる。

本州、四国、九州に分布する落葉低木。

バイカウツギは本来は日本に自生している植物の名ですが、園芸的に多く利用されるのは、欧州原産を主にした交雑種です｡
名前の由来は、芳香のある白いウメに似た花がいくつか集まって咲くことから。
全体の感じがウツギに似ていますが、花びらがウツギは５枚で、バイカウツギの花びらは４枚で属も別になっています。

It is planted for ornamental purposes and blooms fragrant white flowers from May to July.
Mock orange(Baikatsugi) is originally the name of a plant that grows naturally in Japan, but hybrids mainly native to Europe are often used for horticulture.
The name comes from the clusters of fragrant white plum-like flowers that bloom.
The overall feeling is similar to that of Deutzia, but Deutzia has 5 petals, while Mock orange has 4 petals, and belongs to a different genus.
